Ultrasonic testing is a non-destructive test method that utilises sound waves to detect cracks and defects in parts and materials. It is also used to determine a materials thickness, including measuring the wall thickness of a tube or pipe.

Ultrasonic testing is optionally available on thermowells in order to check the the quality of full penetration welds on flanged thermowells. It can also be used to determine the bore concentricity by measuring the wall thickness of the thermowell stem.
